Activities
Workshops
UITP achieved a 'first' in the Middle East and
North Africa (MENA) with its successful workshop dedicated exclusively
to public transport, 13-15 January 2003, in Dubai. The event,
'The future of public transport in the MENA region', was hosted
by UITP member Dubai Municipality, and attracted over 120 public
transport professionals and decision-makers from 15 countries.
It is largely due to the enthusiasm expressed at this workshop
that subsequent events, and the planned establishment of a regional
division, have progressed at such a pace.
From 9 till 11 October 2004 a second workshop was held on 'public
transport regulation'. Several good practices were presented
on institutional coordination and regulation as well as on improving
the overall quality and efficiency of public transport operations.
As a consensus was obtained about recommendations that should
be made the conclusions of the workshop were turned into a strong
declaration called 'Towards an efficient and profitable public
transport sector for the MENA Region' (Download
the Declaration - PDF format)
All presentations and more information about both workshops

Training Programmes
Training programmes are an excellent way to enable
participants to exchange ideas and knowledge with a view to
improving the quantity and quality of public transport.
UITP organised its first regional training programme in Amman,
Jordan, 21-24 February 2004.
