The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) opens a new office in India

From Korea to the rest of the world – representatives from all continents met in Seoul Asia-Pacific Congress, Exhibition and IPTS Conference

“Innovations in policy and technology: what works for public transport”, the 5th Asia-Pacific Congress, Exhibition and IPTS Conference attracted some 500 delegates from all continents of the world to meet in Seoul in June. The event was hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, with the strong support from the Seoul Mayor, Mr LEE Myung Bak. The 6 days event produced excellent discussions on different aspects of public transport, modal choices, financing, energy options, security, marketing and new innovations.

The host organized a very comprehensive technical visits program for the delegates. Visits were made to the metro systems, the Seoul Transport Operation & Information Service system (TOPIS), exclusive bus lanes, high speed rail (KTX and HSR-350) and the Korean first light rail transit system test track. Delegates were very impressed by what were happenings in Korea. During the closing ceremony, the Seoul Metropolitan Government received the UITP Asia-Pacific Award for “Innovations in Policy” for its successful implementation of the Public Transportation Reform since 2004.

2,400 visitors came to the Asia-Pacific Exhibition. It was very encouraging to learn that more than one fifth of the exhibitors concluded the business deals in the exhibition. All delegates were very enjoyed the richness of the exhibits. Seoul Metro, received the “Most Innovative Exhibit” Award for the modernization of their track system, from traditional ballasted tracks to slab tracks which ease the maintenance of the network. LG CNS Co., Ltd. and Korea Smart Card Co., Ltd received the “Most Innovative IT Exhibit” Award for their implementation of T-Money, the electronic fare collecting system.

“UITP is not only intellectual assets that can not be valued in monetary unit, but also vision for next generation. UITP is becoming a dominant business platform. It has become an extensive knowledge center in the public transport market of the world” said Mr. KANG Kyung Ho, Chairman, UITP Asia-Pacific Division, at the closing ceremony.
