Report of Activities 2005-2007
Message from the President and Secretary General
Evolutions in the sector and in UITP
This activity report reflects the resonance that the debate about public transport has gained during the past two years. Today public transport is recognised as a critical element in major societal debates such as climate change, congestion, energy efficiency and social integration. The need for a holistic approach to mobility involving citizens, operators, authorities, industry and academics in close cooperation is also now widely accepted.
As the sector has been evolving, so too has UITP been on a journey which has resulted in some profound changes in its membership composition and service offer. This has been reflected in a new vision and mission for the association that was unanimously adopted by our General Assembly:
Connecting the world of public transport
UITP is:
- The network of all mobility actors
- The catalyst for new business opportunities
- The global centre of knowledge and know-how
- The advocate for public transport and sustainable mobility
- The promoter of innovations and forward-looking solutions
Connecting the world of public transport
The choice of new vision statement is certainly apt. With three new regional offices in Dubai, India, and Turkey, and Eurasia becoming an official UITP division, UITP truly has been ‘connecting the world of public transport’. These parts of the world, where the development of urban areas is galloping, represent the new type of challenges that our sector is facing. All this enables UITP to get a better global view of public transport trends worldwide and also to provide tailored services to our members.
Five pillars - Two years of achievements
For each of the five pillars of our new mission statement – network, business opportunities, centre of knowledge, advocate and innovation – UITP has been active over the past two years in developing activities and services that serve the interests of our members. Each chapter of this Report reviews our main achievements in these five domains.

Forging on with our key priorities
Specific priority areas that UITP has focused on over the past two years and that merit a special mention are: communications and advocacy, financing, and youth.
Communications and advocacy
Our relations with key external stakeholders are continuing to grow, in particular with intergovernmental institutions like UNEP and UN-HABITAT, the World Bank and the European institutions. One concrete example of our achievements over the past two years is the integration of urban transport issues in the recent Green Paper of the European Commission.
Over the next two years we look forward to forging more and closer links with all stakeholders: from within the sector itself to political decision-makers and the general public.
Financing
In terms of financing, UITP has gathered valuable information so far. Congestion charging was a specific area that we have addressed in recent UITP workshops and policy positions. Our work to promote alternative financing schemes will be continued, taking into account the scarcity of public funds, the essential shift to private money, external costs and market-based instruments.
Youth
We will continue to focus on an important commitment for the future: the youth. In the past two years we launched the Youth Project Awards to highlight the existing expertise within the sector to engage with young people. We will now broaden our programme to group together experts in marketing, industry, sustainable development and human resources.
United efforts
This Report of Activities gives a snapshot of the life of our association between our two World Congresses in 2005 and 2007. Everything you see and read on these pages is the fruit of the work and commitment of our members. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank all of you for joining with us to move the sector forward!
