In terms of transport use, young people are the first category of customers. They represent from one third to one half of the total number of regular customers, and they travel more than adults.

One of the major stakes for public transport organisations is to slow the fall in public transport use by young people when they become adults.

It is only by valuing young people, their attitudes and opinions towards public transport, that we can create conditions in which public transport can meet their expectations.

In this context, Roberto Cavalieri, UITP President, Hans Rat, UITP Secretary General, and Patrick Vautier, President of the UITP Commission on Marketing and Product Development invite you to participate in the UITP Youth Project Awards.

These awards will reward creativity and innovation in initiatives targeted at young people, including new processes to involve and engage them. The selection is made by an International Jury composed of relevant experts from all over the world.

This international contest is organised in 2 steps with regional and international awards.

1. The Regional Awards

There is a primary selection for the 7 regions of UITP. Depending on the geographical implementation of your project, you first compete for the geographical awards of your region. For each region, the 3 best projects are selected by the International Jury. These 3 best projects of each Region receive a regional award in November 2006. Up to 21 projects are selected and constitute the Nominees list for the International Awards. The 21 projects are gathered in a brochure to be disseminated during the Congress in Helsinki .

2. The International Awards

After the semi-final, the International Jury selects the 3 best projects out of the 21 best regional projects. These 3 international best projects receive the International Awards during the Awards Ceremony at the Helsinki Congress. The wining participants are informed one month before the Congress.

Selection criteria

-
The targeted projects should contribute, directly or not, to better mobility for all (including easy and affordable mobility for teenagers) but also to better social integration and tolerance. These projects should help fight road fatalities among young drivers and tomorrow's congestion (young people are tomorrow's commuters) but also exclusion, generation barriers and unemployment.
-
Built in favour of young people;
-
Preferably conceived in collaboration with young citizens;
-
Combining public transport and values which are important for youth, such as: social interaction, conviviality, freedom, speed, adventure, pleasure, innovations, etc;
-
Any project with a direct link to areas in the core of young people's lifestyles: culture, education, leisure, first jobs.

Conditions to participate
