SORT
A joint project of the UITP Bus Committee launched in September 2000

Objectives
For ecological, normative, technical, economical and contractual reasons, public transport companies call for vehicle manufacturers to provide minimum fuel consumption standards. The bus sector, operators and manufacturers, need certain technical vehicle data, in particular concerning performance and consumption, in order to have a better knowledge of the Life Cycle Cost of fleets. Pre-purchase tests are therefore becoming increasingly common. However, as they tend to be based on individual situations and specifications, they are both time and money consuming, and results cannot be transferred.

In order to ease test procedures, control test costs and to optimise contractual relations, UITP believes it is in the common interest of both parties, customers and suppliers, to design a clear, unequivocal reference tool to assess road vehicles fuel consumption. No such universal tool has been created up to now.

- Get reliable data certified by approved neutral bodies!
- Don't lose time carrying out new tests for each vehicle batch!
- Save time writing your purchase specifications
- Have a clear reference for after-sale discussions

SORT will provide a useful comparison tool for performance and consumption.

Partners
This project is carried out jointly by operators of the Bus Committee and by manufacturers : Berkhof/Jonckheere, DAF, Evobus, Irisbus, MAN, Neoplan, Van Hool, Voith, Volvo, ZF

Schedule
SORT is first example of multilateral pro-active co-operation between the Bus Division within UITP.

The working group is currently designing a set of universal, location-neutral tests, which are representative, comparable, easy to reproduce and to carry out.

Those tests will be performed by clearly defined vehicles, in clearly defined conditions. The proposed methodology will provide standardised data.
The working group commits itself to completing the first stage by the Madrid Congress in may 2003.
