UITP in the press
April-September 2008
With the second wave of UITP’s joint TV ad with UNEP coinciding with World Environment Day, the ad was once again aired on major international TV stations like BBC World, CNN, Sky News and Bloomberg. It also was broadcast on national TV in a number of countries including Belgium and Greece. Articles on the campaign were also published in the written press, such as EuropeanAgenda, Ville & Transports (France), Nexobús (Spain), De Morgan (Belgium), Miastowruchu (Poland), Circular (New Zealand) and others.
The September launch of the European Bus Systems of the Future project in Rome, Italy, was widely covered in Italy with a full-page article in La Repubblica, a prime-time interview on national Italian radio as well as articles in Il Sole 24 Ore, Libero Roma, Trambus news, Omniroma, Vie & Trasporti and Asapress; as well as in the international press: Transit (UK), Bus Ride (US), The Parliament Magazine (Europe), Urban Transportation Monitor (US), Ville & Transports (France), Bus & Coach Buyer (UK), soitu.es and Australian Bus and Coach.
Light rail was also a hot theme for the press in recent months, with many articles on the subject – and in particular UITP’s Light Rail Conference and Awards - being published in a wide variety of journals: Railways Africa, European Agenda, Vía Libre (Spain), Railway Gazette International, Warsaw Business Journal, Jornal de Notícias (Portugal), Rail Technology Magazine (UK), Track & Signal (Australia), NaNa (Germany), and more besides.
In MENA the regional seminar on public transport in the Mediterranean region was reported on (La Liberté and Le Renoveau, Tunisia), and an extensive article on public transport was published in Business Quatar. In Africa, the South African seminar on communicating on public transport was mentioned in the national paper, The Times. In Latin America, La Reforma (Mexico) and La Voz (Argentina) quoted UITP data. And a number of journals also reported on UITP’s recent global expansion in Eastern Europe (Club Feroviar, Romania; NaNa, Germany; Environmental Expert) and in Iran (ITS International, Nexobús, Track and Signal).
UITP Secretary General Hans Rat’s participation in the World Cities Summit in Singapore also attracted media attention, most notably in The Straits Times (Singapore), The Times of India, Asia Pulse and Yahoo! Finanzas (Spain).
In April articles on the topic of technological innovations in public transport continued to be published in the trade press in the aftermath of the first edition of IT-TRANS: Nahverkehrspraxis, Verkehr und Technik, Bus & Bahn (all from Germany), Personenvervoer (the Netherlands).
The positions and activities of UITP’s EU Committee were echoed in the press, with their priorities for the Green Paper on Urban Mobility outlined in Bus.it and LocalGov.co.uk, and their recent declaration on being mentioned in Nexobús, Carril Bus (both from Spain) and Australasian Bus and Coach.
And finally, with the one-year countdown to UITP’s World Congress and Exhibition already on, a number of articles on this landmark event were recently published: Fleets and Fuels, Track & Signal (Australia), Environmental Expert, Transit (UK), Swiss Rail and the Austrian news wire, APA.
