    UITP is the worldwide public transport association. In the European Union, the UITP EU Committee gathers the public transport undertakings and the national associations, members of UITP.

    The public transport sector in EU 27 includes regional and suburban rail, metro/tram, local/regional bus and local waterborne passenger transport services.

    Key facts for public transport in the EU 27
    Passenger journeys 60 billion/year (more or less equally shared between road modes (mainly bus) and rail modes (urban, suburban and regional rail)

    (comparison: 700 million in the aviation sector)
    Economic value of public transport services € 130 - 150 billion/year or 1– 1.2% of GDP
    Employment
    • Direct employment1,2 million
    • Indirect employment 2 - 2.5 indirect jobs for each direct job in average
    4 indirect jobs in countries with high investments into public transport, like for example Switzerland

    TOWARDS A NEW APPROACH TO MOBILITY IN URBAN AREAS

    European transport policy is currently at a cross-road as far as its urban, suburban and regional dimensions are concerned. In order to make public transport better known amongst the MEPs, the UITP EU-Committee developed a brochure that sets out in a nutshell three major aspects for sustainable urban mobility:

    UITP and European Rail Legislation Impacting Local Rail Networks (Urban, Suburban And Regional)- Sending the right message to travellers on the basis of the “polluter pays” principle;
    - Making it easy to travel differently, in a sustainable way;
    - From public transport operators to mobility service providers.
