    INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL CINERAIL

UITP is a proud partner of the Cinérail film festival which takes place in Paris every year. For a whole week, this unique festival projects screenings of some great movie classics as well as a competition of short films. Prizes for short films are awarded in a number of different categories such as 'Grand Prix Cinerail', fiction, documentary, animation, corporate films and advertisements. The films screened during the festival provide a wonderful opportunity to depict rail and metro as so much more than a means of transport. They show stations, metros and trains as an integral part of our daily lives; as a place of encounter, action and interaction; as a setting for dreams, poetry and fantasy; and as a backbone for social and economic development.

After a successful 16th edition held in Paris in February 2008, the 17th Cinerail - International Festival Train & Metro on Film – will take place once again in the French capital from 25 to 31 March 2009.

Corporate and advertising films competition: Call for registrations

One of the highlights of the festival will be the presentation to professionals of the most recent audiovisual productions from railways or public transport companies.
This event is entirely dedicated to audiovisual communications and films produced on railway/metro themes, and has become after 16 editions a worldwide reference. It gives professionals dealing with railway communications an extremely valuable opportunity to exchange their experiences and best practices on the use of audiovisuals.

The corporate film presentations will take place at UIC headquarters in Paris with a two-day program on 26-27 March 2009. A competition will be organised in order to evaluate, with the support of an international jury, the quality and efficiency of the audiovisuals presented.

In preparation of this international event, railway companies are invited to register the films/audiovisuals they intend to present, and send to the Cinerail organisers a DVD for a first viewing and selection.

    Relevant categories are:

-Corporate communications films (audiovisual 'business cards', presentation of rail projects, etc),
    - Commercials, TV spots,
    - Internal communications on staff training, safety, security…
    - Documentaries produced for TVs on railway/metro issues,
    - Feature films (cinema, TV) produced with the support/sponsorship of railways.

Technical specifications for a presentation in Paris in March 2009 are:

    - Films in English or with English subtitles,
    - Not longer than a standard TV documentary (50'),
    - Accepted format: Beta sp or Beta num / digit format - DVD-R or DVD+R only.

    European Mobility Week

UITP : Key international official partner

UITP signed ‘European Mobility Week Pledge’ at a ceremony during the European Commission’s Green Week in April 2002. Since then, the association became an official partner of European Mobility Week and the Car Free Day. These initiatives supported and financed by the European Union offer a unique opportunity to all mobility actors to play a key role in sustainable mobility and enhance their own public image.

European Mobility Week has been running for six years and aims to influence mobility and urban transport issues for the long-term as well as to improve health and quality of life of European citizens. It is organised each year from 16 to 22 September and represents a perfect opportunity to present sustainable alternatives to European citizens, to explain the challenges that cities and towns are facing in order to induce a change of behaviour and make progress towards a more sustainable transport strategy for Europe. It gives people space to think about what our urban streets are really for and to debate concrete solutions for tackling urban challenges such as air pollution.

Theme of EMW 2008: ‘Clean Air for All!’
This year's edition will be held from 16 to 22 September 2008, under the theme ‘Clean Air for All!’, to convey the message that air pollution has been one of Europe's main political concerns since the late 1970s. European Union policy on air quality aims to develop and implement appropriate instruments to improve air quality. Air pollution is also a main concern for local authorities and citizens. According to the EMW opinion poll, European citizens are worried about the quality of the air they breathe and put air pollution at the top of their list of environmental concerns. Therefore, the European Mobility Week campaign 2008 will focus on this topic and will encourage local authorities to organise awareness-raising activities around the theme of air quality as well as to launch permanent measures that will help reduce the level of CO2 emissions linked to the transport sector.

EMW 2008: Be part of it!
Using public transport to satisfy mobility needs is certainly a central theme of the European Mobility Week. Public transport should be fundamental to a good mobility in urban areas.
All public transport actors in the European Union will be able to use the Week as an opportunity to promote intermodal solutions and give clear information on how public transport connects with the other modes, proving that it can offer a good alternative to the use of the private car

    Local actions:
Local authorities have a crucial role to play in the implementation of national and European legislation. An integrated transport policy and travel plans fostering sustainable mobility are fundamental to protect citizens from harmful air pollution

UITP fully recognises the importance of raising awareness on the environmental impacts of everyone’s modal choice and encouraging the use of sustainable modes of transport. This is why we invite all our members to participate in this event and take this opportunity to promote public transport.

For plenty of ideas and inspiration to get involved, read our Core Brief on European Mobility Week.

    European Mobility Week Award 2008
All local authorities participating in EMW 2007 entitled ‘STREETS FOR PEOPLE’ were invited to apply for the EMW Award 2008. This award rewards local authorities’ activities carried out in the framework of EMW and promoting good practices in sustainable urban transport. UITP was part of an independent panel of experts who assessed all applications and shortlisted ten local authorities which they considered had performed outstandingly well during EMW 2007. The Award winner and two finalists were officially announced on 13 February 2008 during a prestigious ceremony held in the framework of the workshop ‘A Change for the better!.

Winner of European Mobility Week Award 2008
The city of Koprivnica was awarded with the European Mobility Week Award 2008 for its outstanding achievements during EMW 2007 and previous editions. Thanks to its participation to EMW since 2002, the city managed to make its urban areas more sustainable by heavily promoting soft transport modes such as walking and cycling. The city launched a three year programme ‘Streets for People’ (2007-2009) that will work towards making the city totally accessible, promoting new alternative fuels for public transport vehicles and reallocating road space to non-motorised traffic. The winner received the Award from the Commissioner in charge of the Environment, Stavros Dimas.

The jury members were impressed by the comprehensive action plan developed by the city, including activities on all key transport themes: bicycle, responsible car use, public transport, green spaces and mobility and health. The bicycle trainings, the road safety promotion and the educational activities were attended by many citizens with an active participation of youngsters who took out the challenge to relay the information received to their parents and to influence their travel behaviours.
