Growing Worldwide
A HIGHLIGHT of the General Assembly was the overwhelming support given to the creation of a Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Division within the association.
It is certainly a fascinating area for public transport at the moment and UITP is happy to have such a strong relationship and innovative presence in the region.
UITP workshop for a new public transport network in Sharjah
Conscious about providing liveable cities for future generations and the environment, the city of Sharjah took advantage of their UITP network in order to gain direct access to best practice on strategic and operation matters. Five UITP members provided expertise at a three-day workshop and were invited to discuss the most important issues of setting up a public transport network with the staff of the local host. Sharjah Public Transport sought advice from these operational experts to help them make strategic decisions in their construction of a network from scratch. A formal public transport network was the solution chosen to ease the congested roads of Sharjah, situated only 25 kilometres from Dubai , UAE. A city of over 600,000 inhabitants, it has quadrupled in population in the last 10 years. Without a public transport system in this highly urbanised city, roads have quickly become congested.
The international experts assembled were also very enthusiastic about their experience in Sharjah. The interaction between the different operational experiences of the visiting panel proved incredibly productive for all parties involved. "I have the feeling I learned more than I gave," said one of the experts.
