Waterborne transport
 What is waterborne transport?
Waterborne transport is the use of ferries or other waterborne vessels in the transportation of passengers via waterways.
Today passenger transport in urban areas is all too often dominated by individual motorised modes, with the road networks in many places being overloaded.
Despite this the waterways reserve capacity is often not considered, and the potential of this attractive and efficient transport mode remains underestimated.

Developments and trends
Advanced power technologies, such as solar or hydrogen-based systems are forging into operation and add new dimensions to the function and appeal of waterborne transport.
Due to its sensitive operational environment the utilisation of clean energy sources is one of the biggest challenges.
As public transport companies strive to increase their portfolio, waterborne transport is becoming an increasingly important element of the public transport chain, ranging from commuter services to tourist operations.

Introduction
The Waterborne Transport Committee was founded in 1994 as a subcommittee of the Regional Transport Committee. It was formally approved as a full Committee in 1999 and remains part of the Regional Transport Division. It offers a platform for exchange for all actors dealing with Waterborne Transport. It aims to increase the awareness of all public transport actors, inside and outside UITP, on waterborne specific matters, and to promote the interests of waterborne public transport as a viable mode around the world.
The Chairman of the Waterborne Transport Committee is Larry Jacobs, Bermuda Ministry of Transport and Tourism.
