HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal

The UITP Charter on Sustainable development has made sustainability a decisive criterion on a public and entrepreneurial scale of values.

I am impressed by the strong commitment of the public transport sector as demonstrated by the 100 or so  organizations who have signed the charter and this first conference in 120 years of UITP specially dedicated to the topic of sustainability is also a milestone.

But also for the first time the voice of youth has been included and their expectations from the sector are being brought into the discussions.

I appreciate that the Young Think Tank of The Club of Rome (TT30) is contributing to this event.

CONGRATULATIONS - this Conference on Public Transport and Sustainable Development in Bilbao is a milestone helping to ensure our world is liveable for future generations

UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UN Environment Programme (UNEP) - Achim Steiner

Achim Steiner

Mobility is one of the hottest topics on the planet with far reaching effects on quality of life, balanced societies, economic progress, the environment, public health and social inclusion.

It is a challenge for governments, local authorities, private business, civil society and the individual.

Modern, well planned and adequately funded public transport alongside alternatives to the private car offer an intelligent, 21st century way forward on our rapidly urbanizing planet.

I applaud the UTIP's Sustainable Development Charter and look forward to an ever deeper collaboration between UNEP and the association. I wish you a positive and action-orientated conference in Bilbao.

Herrn Moritz Leuenberger
Bundesrat, eidgenössisches Departement für Umwelt, Verkehr, Energie und Kommunikation der Schweiz

Translation of the message of support from Moritz Leuenberger, Federal Councillor, Head of the Department of Environment, Transportation, Energy and Communications of Switzerland

Your efforts regarding sustainable development world-wide are completely “in the line” with the strategy of this ministry. Your main focus – sustainable transport in cities as well as the sustainable transport of goods based on intermodal models – correspond to transport policies that must lead into actions.

I congratulate you on your initiative that I whole-heartedly support and wish you much of success in the future steps you will take together with the other associations and transport companies who sign your charter.
