The
European Local Transport Information Service is an interactive guide
to current transport measures, policies and practices implemented
in cities and regions across Europe (http://www.eltis.org).
The aim of ELTIS is to support a practical transfer of knowledge
and exchange of experience in the field of urban and regional transport
in Europe and so help create a more sustainable living environment,
one which provides greater accessibility and mobility to its inhabitants.
ELTIS
is designed for everyone involved in improving mobility, transport
efficiency and safety as well as reducing the environmental impacts
of transport, in particular transport policy-makers and managers,
transport operators and user groups.
ELTIS is a World Wide Web site with free public access that currently
contains a comprehensive database of approximately 553 local,
regional, national & European transport case studies under
thirteen headings. These include public passenger transport, walking
and cycling, goods transport, roads and traffic management, transport
for people with reduced mobility, finance for transport, transport
and land use planning, demand management and pricing, integration,
intermodality and organisation of transport, services for transport
users, environmental impacts, and socio-economic Issues.
The database is in three languages (English, French and German)
and has a search engine, allowing a search for all documents on
a subject of the user's choice as well as a menu system, in which
urban transport practices are grouped into concept themes. In
addition, ELTIS offers a variety of interactive services, including
news groups, a help-desk and links to relevant web-sites to maximise
the dissemination of good practice to professionals and citizens
and ensure an up-to-date information flow.
The
second part of the project will start within the thematic network
VOYAGER due to begin in September 2001. ELTIS will be used as
dissemination tool of this thematic network.
There
are many features on the internet site. New
on ELTIS offers a regular round-up of latest EU local transport
news and events as well as an overview of the latest case studies
entering ELTIS.
Searching
ELTIS provides you with facts and illustrations on urban and
regional transport activities in Europe. The ELTIS database incorporates
an ever-growing number of transport case studies, concepts and
documentation and bibliographical references which you can look
up by using your own pre-selected specifications.
Add
to ELTIS allows users to publicise and disseminate the results
of local transport measures and projects implemented in their
city or region. Public transport managers can submit examples
of their organisation's own transport activities directly to the
ELTIS database.
ELTIS
Forum provides you with a platform to participate in the debate
on the latest European transport policies and tools.
ELTIS
also offers Web
Links to other sites of interest in the transport field.
ELTIS was jointly funded by
the transport research and policy directorates of DGVII
of the European Commission, as part of the follow-up to the Citizens'
Network Green Paper, and UITP,
the International Union of Public Transport.
ELTIS was developed in partnership with POLIS,
a European network of cities and regions promoting innovative
transport measures, EURONET,
a European research institute specialised in sustainable urban
planning and development, Transport
and Travel Research Ltd, a transport consultancy offering
advice and research to support transport planning and decision-making
and Gestionnaires
Sans Frontières - Romania, a foundation transferring
know-how on transport and environmental management between East
and West in Europe. In addition to the project partners, a number
of other associations are contributing significantly to the ELTIS
database, including the Car
