A Vision for Public Transport
in Europe
Final Report now available :
|
| VOYAGER
- Vehicle for Mobility - Advancing Public
Passenger Transport in Europe |
| |
|
| Scope
of the Project |
VOYAGER
is a Thematic Network that responds to the issues identified in
the Key Action "Sustainable Mobility and Intermodality",
within the European Union 5th Framework Thematic Programme "Competitive
and Sustainable Growth".
VOYAGER aims to facilitate a fundamental evolution in public transport
to meet current and future societal needs for high quality, accessible,
frequent, widespread and safe mobility. To this end VOYAGER will
establish a comprehensive vision of the public passenger transport
systems required in the future.
VOYAGER intends to identify future PT systems and service requirements
and the critical development path to implement actions to achieve
these needs. This will include addressing current urban and regional
transport challenges such as congestion, pollution, accidents and
economic inefficiency as well as changing mobility patterns, increasing
urbanisation and urban sprawl. It is the objective of the network
to identify sustainable solutions with a direct and positive effect
on urban environments and the quality of life.
VOYAGER in this perspective goes beyond the establishment of
a thematic network in providing a reference tool and a vision, which
defines the future organisation and structure of the public transport
sector. |
| |
|
| Objectives |
| The
purpose of VOYAGER is to consequently create an open European Network
of key actors of local and regional Public Transport for experience
exchange, dissemination and consensus building. VOYAGER will establish
a platform where PT stakeholders (operators, suppliers, authorities,
researcher and users) air their views, give input on current and
planned actions and ultimately provide recommendations to improve
PT environment to a level that fully meets the transport user's
requirement. |
| |
|
| Schedule |
| To achieve
this vision, VOYAGER will perform the following tasks over a period
of 40 months, having started in September 2001: |
| - |
identify
the state of the art of local and regional PT |
| - |
identify
key barriers and challenges for implementing competitive and
attractive public transport systems at local and regional
level |
| - |
validate
the impacts of various innovative concepts and strategies
of public transport |
| - |
select
and develop "good practice" case studies |
| - |
develop
specific guidelines and policy recommendations for all public
transport stakeholders on the needed actions to realize efficient,
safe and customer-oriented public transport systems |
| - |
widely
disseminate the key outcomes of the project |
